Spirit Airlines Resumes Service to Port-au-Prince

Hello Sweetee,

It’s so good to know that the low cost Spirit Airline once again has resumed service to Port-au-Prince, Haiti departing out of Florida but we need more carriers to service flights to Haiti. Spirit Airlines regular passenger service was suspended following the massive 7.0 earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010.

President and CEO Ben Baldanza informed the media, “We couldn’t have been more eager to resume service and are thrilled to once again liberate Haiti from high fares.” “Often times, people use disasters to take advantage of other’s misfortune and profit through exploitation. We are happy to continue offering the ultra low fares that our friends and families in Haiti have come to know and love.”

Spirit currently has a $65.71* one-way, seven-day advance purchase fare on any available future travel dates between Fort Lauderdale and Port-au-Prince available for purchase through March 10, 2010.

Since Spirit Airlines started flying to Haiti in 2007, it has lowered fares over 40 percent, saving Haitians over $10 million. Spirit’s highest fares are less than the lowest fares of other airlines flying to Port-au-Prince from South Florida. For example, Spirit’s maximum fare today after FPT (see attached press release on Fuel Pass Through) is $160.71 each way, which is substantially lower than fares found on another airline’s website of over $480 each way. However, you are charge for each luggage you check-in.

Spirit’s daily service departs Fort Lauderdale at 9:45 am and arrives in Port-au-Prince at 11:45 am. The return flight departs Port-au-Prince at 12:45 pm and arrives in Fort Lauderdale at 2:48 pm.

Since the earthquake hit, Spirit has dedicated staff and aircraft to assisting with the humanitarian aid relief efforts for the Haitian community, including donating over $250,000 in flights full of supplies. In addition, the airline gave 5,000 FREE Spirit miles to everyone who donated at least $5 to the Red Cross, UNICEF or Yéle Haiti (enough miles for a free flight), which resulted in raising over $210,000 for the American Red Cross, UNICEF and Yéle Haiti. Spirit also pledged $75 to Yéle Haiti for every qualified person who applied for and used its FREE SPIRIT™ MasterCard.

However, Jetblue and other low cost carriers need to jump in and give Haitians an alternative besides Spirit and American Airlines. There need to be more competitors that would allow people to choose another carriers especially in New York and others states beside Delta that only flies out of New York and Air France that only flies once a day out of Miami, Florida.

Our voice can make a difference so let’s find a way to organize and make a change by asking other carriers to provide more options besides American Airlines and Spirit to fly into Haiti. Also, let’s demand lower prices so people don’t feel discourage in their efforts to continue their support and service to aid Haiti in their rebuilding!!

Let’s be the change and make the difference you want to see in the world by 1st doing your part and not waiting on others!!

Sashaying Off,

Precious Pat V
